Medford is a city and the administrative center of Jackson County, Oregon, United States. As of July 1, 2018, the city has a population of 82,347 and an agglomeration of 217,479 people, making Medford agglomeration the fourth most populous in Oregon. The city was named in 1883 by David Loring, an engineer and spokesman for the Oregon and California Railroad, after the town of Medford, Massachusetts, which is near David’s hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. Medford is near the Bear Creek Crossing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town is 66.67 km², of which 66.64 km² is land and 0.03 km² water. Nearby towns include Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Rosberg, Redding (Calif.), and Crescent City (Calif.). Medford is 369 km from Salem, the capital of Oregon.
