Muncie / ˈmʌnsi / is a registered city and the administrative center of Delaware County, Indiana . It is located in East Central Indiana, about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Indianapolis . According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 70,085. It is the main city of Muncie in the metropolitan statistical area and has a population of 117,671.

The Lenape (Delaware ) people who arrived in the area in the 1790s founded several small villages, including one known as the town of Muncie, along the White River . The small trading post, renamed Muncitown, was chosen as the county seat of Delaware County and established in 1827. Its name was officially shortened to Muncie in 1845 and transformed into a town in 1865. Muncie developed as a manufacturing and industrial complex. downtown, especially after the Indiana gas boom of the 1880s. Ball State University is located here . As a result of Middletown , a sociological study first conducted in the 1920s, Muncie is considered one of the most studied cities of its size in the United States.
