Murrieta, CA

Overall Score

3.6

Murrieta belongs to the Borough of Riviereside. The history of the city began when, in the middle of the 19th century, a certain Basque named Eusequiel Murrieta acquired the area, which includes the present territory of Murrieta. He organized sheep pens and farms there. He returned to his homeland in the late 1860s, and his younger brother Juan took over the land and farm. In 1873, Juan brought in about a hundred thousand sheep and thus greatly increased production. However, in the mid-1880s he sold virtually all of the land and moved to Los Angeles. He founded the village and named it in his honor.

In the early 20th century, hot springs were popular among tourists, and the town began to become a health resort a little east of Murrieta. But in 1935, Murrayette was left without rail access to the rest of the world, and it was detrimental to the economy of the village, because the population had already become accustomed to living off the benefits of tourism. In the early 1980s, the city was hit by the I-15 highway, and the population grew as a result. In 1990, the population of Murrayet began a campaign to reorganize the settlement, and in the following year Murrayet was declared a city.
