Port Orange was settled by John Milton Hawkes , who after the U.S. brought freed blacks to work in his sawmill. Civil War . Esther Hawkes established an integrated school in the area. The colony struggled soon after it was established and most of the colonists left. The area that became known as Freemanville , is a legacy of the settlers who remained in the area.
