The modern city of Syracuse is located at the site of an ancient polis. It was founded in the 8th century, although archaeological excavations confirm the presence of older (up to 5,000 years ago) settlements in the Syraracuz area. The ancient Syracubus – a Greek tribe of Scicilia, which over time became the largest in the region and spread its power over an entire region. In the 6th to 4th centuries, the city was a famous cultural and commercial center. By the middle of the fourth century, it was a huge megalopolis with a population of millions of millions of people. However, war conflicts did not leave it alone. Syracuse was at war with the Persians, the Aphinians, the Germanic tribes, and was subjected to attack by the Carpathians. In 212 AD, the inaccessible walls of Syracuse were taken by the Roman army.
Since 535, Syracuse, having lost its power, has been under the rule of the Empire of the Republic of Rome. In 888 the city was conquered by the Arabs, in the 11th century by the Normans. At that time the Syracuchusians were part of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1302 they were part of the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon. From the 18th century onward, the city passed under the rule of the Savoie Kingdom, the Italian Empire, until 1860, when it became part of the united Kingdom of Italy.
The citys cultural heritage dates back thousands of years. The ancient Syracuse Mountains are a complex of cultural monuments in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. These are the Jeremiahs Fortress (3rd century B.C.), the Grotto & ∼Dynicias Inlet; the Roman Amphitheatre and one of the largest theatres in the Middle Kingdom of Africa. E.), the cathedral cathedral (7 century), the spring of Artusa, the palaces of Vari Varianto (17 century) and Montaltalto (1397), the castle of Monnae (1240), the church of St. Lucia (12 century). Syracuse left traces of the Roman, Jewish and Spanish people in their land, which could not fail to affect the diversity of the citys architecture. Syracuse has many museums, including the Archaeological Museum (1780), one of the largest in Europe, the Museum of Bellomo.
Syracuse is the birthplace of the great ancient scholar Archimedes. It is also in Syracuse that the philosopher Plato Platon tried to build «s ideal state.
